If you own a Bolex H16 bayonet-mount camera and a Vario-Switar 12.5-100 lens, you have the opportunity to convert your equipment to the Super 16 format at an affordable price. Once the conversion is performed, switching between the 16 and Super 16 is very easily done in the field (for SB, SBM, EBM and EL cameras).The modified characteristics of the Vario-Switar lens:

f = 14.5 - 115mm, f/2.3. When using Aspheron super wide angle attachment: f = 7.5mm.

BOLEX AND SUPER 16

Conversion of H16 RX, RX4, RX5, SB, SBM, EBM and EL cameras.
For film productions of all kinds, whether for science, research or documentaries, destined for classical large-screen projection and transfer to video, 16mm Bolex cameras have an excellent reputation with professionals, semi-professionals or discerning amateurs all over the world.

Film specialists agree that, largely on account of a significant improvement in definition due to its larger image, the Super 16 format offers a higher degree of professionalism, specially with a view to new wide screen television technology and blow-up to 35mm standard film.

In line with this new development, Bolex has introduced the Super 16 format. All 16mm Bolex cameras with bayonet lens mount or C-mount (H16 RX, RX4, RX5, SB, SBM, EBM and EL) can be converted to the new format with a viewfinder 10X or 13X. The current models Bolex H16 SBM and EL can be ordered already converted to Super 16 or can be adapted at a later stage. It is useful to know that a Super 16 converted Bolex camera can be quickly readapted to regular 16 at any time and vice versa, without special tools or parts. The RX cameras in Super 16 is definitive but may be readapted to Regular 16 in our works in replacing some Super 16 parts with Regular 16 ones.
Modification of the Vario-Switar lenses
f = 12.5 - 100mm

The use of Kern fixed focus lenses of the current series, with the exception of the Switar f = 10mm 1:1.6, does not present any problems. This is not the case for the Vario-Switar zoom lenses traditionally supplied with our cameras: the old f = 18-86mm EE and OE models are unusable, the 16-100mm POE model can be used with some restrictions for the short focal length. The current 12.5-100mm and 12.5-100mm PTL models show a "port-holing" effect with focal lengths below f= 25mm.

This has motivated us to undertake modification of the Vario-Switar f = 12.5-100mm range, which enables us to offer a high quality lens at an interesting price. The transformation consists of replacing the basic lens, i.e. groups A and B in the attached diagram.

The specifications of the modified lens are as follows:

Maximum aperture: 1 : 2,3.


Focal length range
Long focal length: f = 115mm instead of f = 100mm,
Short focal length: f = 14.5mm instead of f = 12.5mm.

Horizontal shooting angle
Long focal length: f = 115mm (lens focused to infinity) = ~7°
Short focal length: f = 14.5mm (lens focused to infinity) = ~53° 24'.

Although the range of focal lengths is 14.5mm to 115mm instead of 12.5mm to 100mm, it should be
noticed that the shooting angle is even wider than the original version, on account of the width
of the Super 16 image.




ASPHERON
On both versions of the lens supplied with the Aspheron button, the aspheric optical complement can be used without restriction. The focal length becomes f = 7.5mm (instead of f = 6.5mm), thus resulting in an horizontal shooting angle of 75° practically without distortion or loss of quality.



Filming with the close up lens remains also possible.


MODIFICATION OF THE 400 FEET (120 m) MAGAZINE
In order to avoid scratches and pressure marks on the film, the entry funnel of the 400 feet (120m) magazine has to be modified.

With this Super 16 program, Bolex is in the position to offer complete equipment or to modify all your cameras and lenses already in use, at very attractive prices.

CAMERAS CONVERTED TO SUPER 16

  1. Before inserting a film, make sure - by looking at the upper part of the front plate - that the optical axis is adjusted for the required format ("S" opposite its mark for Super 16 and "N" for regular 16).
  2. Except for the RX cameras, the change of the optical axis position for the two formats is achieved by shifting the front plate after having loosened the 4 fixing screws (5 screws on SB and SBM cameras).
    Two of those screws are secured by a nut located on both sides of the film gate in the film chamber.
    WARNING: Only the upper plate (approx. 4mm thick) should be shifted to match the marks.
    Whenever possible, we recommend to have this operation done by a Bolex Service Station.
  3. The loading procedure remains unchanged. It is recommended to do these operations in very dim light to avoid lateral fogging of the film. The Super 16 image spreading very near the edge of the film, special care should be taken to avoid light leaking between the flanges of the spool.
  4. Always leave a filter holder in place even if no filter is used.
 

VIEWFINDER
The different visible marks in the viewfinder are to be used as follows:

For the current requirements of television, the essential part of the image should be kept in the center field defined by the tips of the arrow, in order to use the film for wide screen TV as well as conventional 1:1.33 sets. Copying of Super 16 on regular 16mm film using the center part of the image is also possible.

Using the whole width of the viewfinder but aligning the top and bottom of the image on the tips of the arrows will result in a ratio of 1:1.77 corresponding to that of wide screen TV and HDTV.

EYEPIECE
The adjustment of the eyepiece has to be done on the grain of the ground glass as indicated in the instruction manual and not on the reference marks, the latter being slightly away from the ground glass.
